Under the general Supervision of the Respiratory Care Services
Medical Director, Department Director/Supervisors the Respiratory
Therapist is responsible for providing quality Respiratory Care
Services for patients in accordance with specific physician’s
orders, and department policies and procedures. Job Duties:
Evaluate patients for appropriateness of the procedures according
to the medical necessity guidelines. Assure patient has thorough
understanding of procedure, instructing patient in a clear and
concise manner. (AIDET). Recognizes signs and symptoms for adverse
reactions to medication or administered therapy and take
appropriate action. Therapist is comfortable and competent in
discussing with the medical staff all respiratory protocols.
Follows proper procedure of initiating O2 protocols and following
through on all eligible patients. Therapist is competent on
installing, maintaining, and discontinuing nebulizers, humidifiers,
simple O2, high flow O2 and tent. Therapist initiates and is
competent in following updraft / MDI protocol and switching over to
MDI therapy when appropriate. Therapist initiates and is competent
in following incentive spirometry protocol. Therapist is competent
in setting up and maintaining BIPAP and CPAP on all types of
patients and can recognize and adjust appropriate settings, as
necessary. Administer prescribed therapy, instruct patient in
purpose and proper technique for therapy, re-evaluate patient’s
needs, recognize and react in the event of an adverse reaction and
document according to departmental policy. Monitors and understands
the limitations of pulse oximeter. Therapist performs respiratory
therapy consults and document assessments on all ordered
treatments. Ensures proper identification and clarification of all
orders prior to initiation of therapy. Therapist can perform ABG’s
and test using GEM 3500 according to SCMC blood gas laboratory
policy and procedures. Document and complete the ABG maintenance
log and on EMR. Therapist changes cartridges and runs CVP on all
Gem 3500. Runs QC when indicated on Gem 3500. Therapist documents
arterial blood gases in the Lab system, according to department
policy and procedure manuals and notifies appropriate personnel if
ABG’S are out of medical director’s approved guidelines. Therapist
can perform and document Capillary heel sticks. Therapist responds
to all CODE BLUES. Able to perform CPR and assist with intubations.
Restocks crash carts and intubation trays. Therapist initiates CPR
recertification before expiration date annually. Performs EKG’s as
ordered. Performs other duties as assigned by supervision.
Qualifications: Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Must
be a Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist. Credentialed by
the National Board for Respiratory Care. (CRT or RRT) Licensed by
the Arkansas State Medical Board. (LRCP) Must maintain current BLS
certification. Training and Experience: Must have advanced
knowledge of all aspects of Respiratory Care. Must have the ability
to communicate with our customers, employee & physicians. Job
Knowledge: Possess the knowledge, ability and understanding to
implement all departmental protocols to meet the needs of special
patient population. Possess the knowledge and must be competent in
evaluating all types of patients in all different aspects of acute
care settings. Possess the knowledge of properly handling and
storing of equipment. Essentials: Must be able to report to work
fit for duty and free of any adverse effects of illegal drugs,
medical marijuana, prescription medication, and/or alcohol. Must be
able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with
other individuals. Physical Demands : Job responsibilities require
a considerable amount of physical work. Workday requires frequent
walking, stooping, bending, and squatting. A moderate degree of
repetitive hand and wrist movement. Work requires dexterity,
hand/eye coordination. The individual will be required to assist
with lifting and moving patients, pushing of carts, wheelchairs,
and other equipment. A significant amount of computer entry is
required.
